What is CTP insurance?

Generally, Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP) covers your liability and the liability of anyone else who drives your vehicle for injuries caused to other road users in a motor vehicle accident. CTP insurance varies between states. In some, it may also offer limited benefits to the driver of your vehicle, including yourself, if injured but at fault in the accident. It’s important to note that CTP insurance doesn’t cover damage to your vehicle, other vehicles or property.

CTP Insurance explained

Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP), also known as a Green Slip in NSW, is needed to register your vehicle.

In some states, CTP insurance also gives some cover to the driver of your vehicle (including yourself) if injured but at fault in a motor vehicle accident.

As a general guide, the following things are covered by a CTP Policy, although the cover can vary from state to state:

  • Injuries caused to passengers in your vehicle
  • Injuries caused to other road users such as drivers and passengers of other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists and pillion passengers
  • Injuries caused through the use of a trailer when attached to a registered vehicle
  • CTP insurance does not cover any damage caused to property
